John STUART, the Earl of Bute and Prime Minister of Great Britain, 12th cousin x 2x removed

John Stuart, the Earl of Bute and Prime Minister of Great Britain is my 12th cousin 2x removed. The ancestor who connects us togher as relatives is Ralph de Neville Sir, of Raby Earl of Westmorland (1364 – 1425), my 13th great grandfather.

A near relative of the family Campbell (his mother was a daughter of the 1st Duke of Argyll), Bute succeeded to the Earldom of Bute (named after the Isle of Bute) upon the death of his father, James Stuart, 2nd Earl of Bute, in 1723. He was brought up thereafter by his maternalistic uncles, the 2nd Duke of Argyll and Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll, 1st and only Earl of Ilay, Viscount and Earl of Hay. Bute studied at Eton College (1720–1728) and the University of Leiden, Netherlands (1728–1732), where he managed to graduate with a degree in civil and public law. On 24 August 1736, he married Mary Wortley Montagu (daughter of Sir Edward and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu), bringing the large Wortley estates to his family. In 1737, due to the influence of his uncles, he was elected a Scottish representative peer, but he was not very active in the Lords and was not reelected in 1741. For the next several years he retired to his estates in Scotland to manage his affairs and indulge his interest in botany.

Edward “Longshanks” King of England I, 17th great grandfather

King Edward I “Lingshanks” of England is my 17th great grandfather.

Edward I born on 17/18 June 1239 died on 7 July 1307. He was also called Edward Longshanks as well as the Hammer associated with the Scots, was King of England from 1272 to 1307. Before his accession into the throne, he was commonly described as The Lord Edward. The very first son of Henry III, Edward was involved from an early age in the political intrigues of his father’s reign, which included an outright rebellion because of the English barons. In 1259, he briefly sided with a baronial reform movement, supporting the Provisions of Oxford. After reconciliation together with father, however, he remained loyal through the subsequent armed conflict, known as the Second Barons’ War. After the Battle of Lewes, Edward was hostage towards the rebellious barons, but escaped after a few months and joined the fight against Simon de Montfort. Montfort was defeated at the Battle of Evesham in 1265, and within 2 yrs the rebellion was extinguished. With England pacified, Edward joined the Ninth Crusade towards the Holy Land. The crusade accomplished little, and Edward was on his way home in 1272 when he was informed that his father had died. Making a slow return, he reached England in 1274 and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 19 August.

The is how King Edward I appears in my genealogical chart. I only went to my 5th great grandfather’s President Thomas Jefferson.

In January 1863 he attended Eton College, in which he continued to be until July 1865. He did not stick out either at academic work or sport while at Eton; his contemporaries identify him as a vivacious and somewhat unmanageable young man. In October 1867 he matriculated at Merton College, Oxford. He had a preference for sports, but was also an enthusiastic reader, and acquired a second-class degree in jurisprudence and contemporary history in 1870. In 1871, Churchill and his uncle George Spencer-Churchill were definitely initiated in to the rites of Freemasonry, as later on his son Winston would be. In 1874 he was chosen to Parliament as Conservative member for Woodstock, Oxfordshire defeating George Brodrick, a Fellow, and afterwards Warden, of Merton College. Hallam Tennyson is my 17th cousin 1x removed. The ancestor who connects us together is Sir Ralph De Neville of Raby Earl of Westmorland (1364 – 1425), my 13th great grandfather.

Hallam Tennyson was born at Chapel House, Twickenham, in Surrey, England, and schooled at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge. His profession aspirations concluded when his parents’ age and ill-health required him to depart Cambridge to become their personalized assistant. The concept of proceeding directly into nation-wide politics was also left behind.

It was partially for Hallam’s advantage that Alfred Tennyson acknowledged a peerage in 1884, the year Hallam married Audrey Boyle (after being disappointed in his love for Mary Gladstone, daughter of William Ewart Gladstone). On his father’s dying in 1892, he handed down the title Baron Tennyson, and also the function of established biographer. His Tennyson: a Memoir was published in 1897.
