Pope Francis’ call for legal acceptance of same-sex relationships

Pope Francis’ call for legal acceptance of #same-sex relationships has raised both hope and worries among #LGBTQ Catholics.

“What we need certainly to create is a civil union law,” the pontiff said in “Francesco,” an upcoming documentary from Russian American filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky. “That way, these are typically legally covered. I stood up for that.”

The remarks are a departure from earlier church messaging. Inside the last book, “Memory and Identity,” Pope John Paul II suggested same-sex marriage was “part of an innovative new ideology of evil.”

In 2003, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI, wrote that respect for gays and lesbians “cannot lead in any solution to the approval of homosexual behavior or even to legal recognition of homosexual unions.”

“Legal recognition of homosexual unions or placing them on a single level as marriage will mean not only the approval of deviant behavior,” Ratzinger wrote, “but would also obscure basic values which fit in with the normal inheritance of humanity.” It has not been long ago that African Americans and Whites could intermarry. At that time, some Whites believed that Blacks would destroy the white race. Now, we see that the Pope is making a bold statement. Why are some people concerned about others’ marriage when their marriage ends in divorce because of an unfaithful partner who may be practicing deviant behavior with an individual of a different gender or that same-gender, which leads to adultery? Why get in other people’s business if your business is not perfect? Who gives a person the right to tell others who to love when your Christian bible say, “save yourself”? What would G-d say about one’s prejudice toward a sister or brother who may not share the same beliefs? Are we better than the other person because we know scriptures and many times misquote them without knowing the historial context that time in which scripture was written? If we take the scriptures literally, should we be stoning people? There are gay people in our families, pulpits, professional life who are doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses, firefighter, ministers, essential workers, and in the church serving in every ministry whether known or unkown. There are just questions to think about.

Do you know what the colors in the rainbow flag stands for?

The rainbow flag that has turned out to be a worldwide icon of hope for LGBTQ individuals around the world, first flew in San Francisco bay area’s United Nations Plaza for Gay Pride Day, on June 25, 1978.

It had eight colors — two more than today’s version — and was created by Gilbert Baker, an openly gay artist, and activist. He has previously been accredited to develop an icon for the LGBTQ people by his associate Harvey Milk, the initial openly gay chosen official in California.

Baker drew motivation from the US national flag, which had commemorated its bicentennial in 1976, and a real rainbow, which showcases the colors of the light spectrum in approximately precisely the same sequence since the flag. He assigned a meaning to every one of this colors: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic, blue for harmony and violet for spirit.

The first flag measured 30 by 60 feet and Baker, who was then 27 yrs. old, had sewn it by hand.

The study by individual rights group Amnesty International, released Fri, reveals how China’s transgender individuals face both widespread discrimination and challenging obstacles to important gender-affirming treatments.

n China there’s barely any reference to transgender issues in regulation, nor any official statistics. With little reliable Chinese-language information, young trans-folk can end up seeking help from unofficial sources, potentially exposing them to bad or unsafe advice.

Even those who go through proper channels find doctors who don’t know how to treat them, or who believe they’re mentally ill, the report says.

Under China’s Sex Reassignment Procedural Management Requirements 2017, “transsexual” people face a strict criteria before undergoing gender-affirming surgery.

According to the law, they must be older than 20, unmarried and have undergone psychological therapy for a year prior. They also have to demonstrate they’ve been wanting the surgery for five years “with no history of hesitation.” Finally, they must have familial consent, regardless of their age.

Difficulty in obtaining hormone therapy has driven some people online or to the black market, where they risk getting counterfeit and unsuitable medications with little information on dosage or side effects.

Out of the 15 transgender people interviewed for the statement, two said they attempted to perform gender-affirming surgery on themselves as a last resort.

Huiming, the transgender lady who performed surgery on herself, survived her attempts to get rid of her male sexual features.
