Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. is an American politician who served as the 47th vice president associated with the United States from 2009 to 2017. He also chaired the Judiciary Committee through the contentious U.S. Supreme Court nominations of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas. Biden unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 plus in 2008.
