Supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump cheer as Trump arrives at a campaign rally on June 18, 2016, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Trump supporters want the 1950s, and they want them now!
There’s a continuing debate in the chattering classes in regards to the deepest motives of those that support Donald Trump for president. One theory may be that its cultural change — epitomized by immigration as well as having the growth of non-Christian religious views — that will make these folks tick. Another is the idea that it’s a product of economic inequality and insecurity. Those that hold the latter view tend to think Trump does have some natural draw in Bernie Sanders voters, direct to the point of sometimes seeming to suggest that Trumpenproletariats just need to bone in their Piketty to find their true gospel in democratic socialism.
But now comes to the end users Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and Brookings utilizing a new survey that adds powerful ammunition onto the “This is the Culture, Stupid!” faction. It covers many issues associated with the changing demographics of America as well as having the perceived impact on the culture for all time along with ill. And it also does not always run off Donald Trump supporters from broader categories like Republicans and white, working-class members. But where it does, it paints a reasonably clear photo of a group of people who hate the changes taking place in this country since the 1950s, and is going to support just about any measures to convert back their watch.
You can find complete sense of the comparative views of Trump supporters by reading the entire report, though perhaps only listing a selection of their perceptions repeatedly will give a superb sense of how strongly these folks resent cultural change:
77 percent say it bothers them into come into hitting people who speak insufficient English.
81 percent say discrimination against whites is just as big a problem as discrimination against minorities.
77 percent say discrimination against Christians in the U.S. is a major issue.
83 percent say the American style of living needs to be protected against foreign influences.
83 percent say the values of Islam are at odds with America’s values and lifestyle.
85 percent say immigrants constitute a handful on American society.
68 percent say the country has changed mostly for the more severe considering that the 1950s.
And here’s the scariest one:
72 percent say we are in need of a frontrunner that is willing to break some rules to set things right.
There wasn’t a follow-up question regarding the willingness to break some heads, but I think the majority of us are familiar with your solution to that one.
