Foster was born in Los Angeles, California. She is the youngest of four children.

Foster attended a French-language prep school, the Lycée Français de Los Angeles. She speaks French fluently and has dubbed herself in French-speaking versions of most of her films. In 2004, she took a minor role in a French WWI film, A Very Long Engagement. She is my 11th cousin 1x removed.
